Benlysta is infused in patients who are battling systemic lupus erythematosus, also known as SLE or lupus, as an additional treatment to other lupus medications. People who have lupus often have high levels of a certain protein in their blood. Benlysta works by binding to and limiting the activity of that protein. When paired with another treatment, Benlysta helps decrease lupus activity.
Benlysta is given by IV infusion and is prescription only. The patient’s physician will decide how often they should receive Benlysta. Each treatment usually lasts about an hour. It is not for patients who have reoccurring infections, mental health problems, have a history of being allergic to medicines, have cancer, or are breastfeeding.
